Roth Nichols, RIC, Therapist at Virginia Counseling Associates

Roth Nichols, RIC

Background and Experience
My name is Roth Nichols, and I am a Resident in Counseling. I hold an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University (2020), an M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University (1996), and a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia State University (1992). I bring over 25 years of clinical mental health experience across diverse settings, including telehealth psychotherapy, community-based programs, psychosocial rehabilitation, inpatient psychiatric care, and maximum-security correctional facilities.

Who I Work With
I work with adults individually and as couples navigating personal and relationship concerns, as well as children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioral, and identity challenges. My experience spans inpatient populations, self-referrals, juvenile justice referrals, and incarcerated individuals. While working in corrections, I developed the "Overcoming Depression" program, which was approved by the Department of Corrections Steering Committee.

Areas of Specialization
I have extensive experience facilitating individual counseling and psychoeducational groups, focusing on:

  - Serious Mental Illness (SMI), including schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder
  - Anxiety disorders and Substance Use Disorders (SUD)
  - Gender dysphoria
  - Suicidal ideation and risk management

Counseling Approach
I believe clients possess innate strengths that can be leveraged for healing. My practice integrates:

  - Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): To manage intense emotions and balance acceptance with change.
  - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Mindfulness: To address negative thought patterns and their impact on behavior.
  - Multimodal Approach: To evaluate multiple dimensions of functioning for a comprehensive treatment strategy.

What to Expect
I offer a comfortable, collaborative space where clients are empowered to actively participate in their wellness goals. Together, we will establish clear objectives to build insight, develop coping skills, and work through challenges.

Availability
I provide telehealth services Monday through Friday, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM (11:00 AM appointments are available upon request).

If you are seeking a confidential, nonjudgmental environment to work toward your goals, please reach out to schedule a session. I look forward to connecting with you.
